Amridge University has a history of providing its students with quality education and teaching excellence. By virtue of this history and its focused mission, Amridge University strives to continue this tradition through the adoption and implementation of holistic educational and institutional goals. The institutional goals are student-centered and are directly related to the University’s mission to prepare men and women, through a commitment to academic excellence and spiritual vitality at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for a lifetime of learning, leadership, and service to the professions, society, and family. Also, these goals are designed to help ensure the provision of quality programs and services which will help lead to the stability and continued growth of the University so that it can continue to meet its educational goals.

At an inter-church Bible conference in Birmingham in 1933, the late Dr. Harry A. Ironside, a respected Bible teacher, challenged a group of Christian business and professional men to establish a Bible school. It was the unanimous conviction of these men that there was a vital need for a school to train Christian workers that was centered on the Bible and also evangelical.

The school was organized and incorporated as the Birmingham School of the Bible. On May 1, 1935, it opened its doors for evening classes. Regular day courses were offered beginning in 1940, and the name was changed to Southeastern Bible School in 1943. A basic three-year program grew to a four-year degree program in 1948. Other academic programs were developed and the charter rights to grant degrees were obtained in 1950. The name of the school was changed to Southeastern Bible College in 1952.

The College attained national accreditation with the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) in 1962. The campus moved from a two story frame house to its Pawnee Avenue Southside location in 1947. In 1988, the College moved to a 10-acre site in Mountain Brook on Highway 280. In March 2001, Dr. Don Hawkins was appointed President. In 2004, with God’s providential blessing, Southeastern Bible College relocated to its current 22-acre campus facilities at 2545 Valleydale Road in North Shelby County.

The Samford University campus is a place renowned for its superb classical beauty. During business hours the campus is teeming with the activity of 4,500 students and 600 employees. More than 100,000 guests visit Samford’s campus each year; each night, more than 1,600 students call Samford “home.”

Since 1896, Oakwood University has provided students the opportunity to enter its halls of learning in preparation for service to community, country, and the world. The University is regionally accredited by the Southern Accrediting Association of Colleges and Schools and the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Department of Education. It offers a liberal arts curriculum in a Christ-centered atmosphere.

The university is situated on approximately 1,000 acres in Huntsville, Alabama, a cosmopolitan city in northwest Alabama, nestled in the beautiful Tennessee Valley at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Huntsville, fondly called “the space capital of the world,” is home for the Marshall Space Center, and is recognized as being one of the most progressive cities in America.

The diverse mix of students’ drawn from many foreign countries and over 40 states, provides an enriched environment that exposes our students to the richness of different cultures and fosters the development of self-esteem, respect for others, and the required skills to be socially adaptable and globally successful.

A caring, supportive faculty with over 60% holding earned doctorates is responsible for Oakwood’s proven ability to meet students’ academic needs.

Oakwood University affords its students a remarkable balance between quality of services rendered and cost. Academic excellence is offered without the student having to worry about paying an exorbitant price for tuition and living expenses. What the university has to offer is well worth the student’s time, money, and effort. It is an investment that will greatly return multiplied dividends.

Institutional scholarships are available to incoming students for their high academic achievements, musical talent, and demonstrated leadership abilities. In addition, state and federal aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and employment. A high percentage of students receive some form of financial assistance.

In 1896, Miles College was founded by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, now the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (C.M.E.) and chartered by the State of Alabama in 1905 as Miles Memorial College to educate African-American young people. The college is still supported by and affiliated with the CME Church, although the faculty and student body represent many religions and cultures, national and international. For over 100 years of survival in a difficult environment, Miles College has held steadfast in its goal of providing a quality college education while challenging and molding the minds of future leaders. During our centennial celebration, we observed our rich heritage as Metropolitan Birmingham’s only senior Historically Black College and the impact it has made in the lives of more than 8,000 alumni of Miles College including two mayors of Birmingham, judges, physicians, business leaders, legislators and teachers.

Miles College is physically located within the city limits of Fairfield, Alabama and is just two blocks from the western-most city limit of Birmingham. Throughout its history, Miles has maintained and continues to maintain an ‘open’ admissions policy that invites all students with a high school education who demonstrate the potential for and commitment to earning a baccalaureate degree.

While many smaller colleges have faced declining enrollment, Miles College has been ranked as the fastest growing United Negro College Fund (UNCF) member in the nation. The geographic diversity among our students: 36% of our first time students are residents of Alabama, 14% from Georgia, 7% from each of Illinois and Florida, 6% from California and the remaining 30% from 27 additional states.

Alumni of Miles College number 5,200 in the state of Alabama and 4,600 of those live in greater Birmingham contributing to its progress as leading educators, preachers, business executives, entrepreneurs, politicians and community leaders. The mobility of our alumni is evidenced by the growing demographic diversity of our students and leads to the belief that the impact of a Miles College education is widening the scope of enriched contributions throughout society. We are proud to continue a long standing tradition to educate students who otherwise could not attend college because of their lack of academic preparation, test scores or their lack of funds while also providing an honors curriculum for academically gifted students.
